When leaders rotate: spotting shifts before the index moves

Sector rotation — when market leadership shifts from one group of stocks to another — is visible in headlines after the fact. By the time financials dominate the news, the RS lines have usually been rising for weeks. The goal of weekly watchlist ranking is to catch these shifts while they are still forming.

Signal 1: Rank compression at the top

When the top three names in a sector group have nearly identical RS slopes and levels, leadership is unstable. Watch for the name that breaks away with a steeper slope over the next two weeks — it often becomes the new sector leader. Conversely, when a long-standing number-one name's RS slope flattens while number two accelerates, a rotation is likely underway.

Signal 2: Cross-sector RS divergence

Compare the average RS slope of each sector group on your watchlist. When one sector's average slope turns positive while another's turns negative, money is rotating between them. This shows up in your ranking table before it appears in broad index performance. During the March 2026 shift from energy to financials, sector average slopes diverged three weeks before the FTSE 350 reflected the change.

Signal 3: Bottom-rank recovery

A name ranked last in its sector group that moves to middle rank within two weeks often signals sector-wide recovery, not just individual strength. When multiple bottom-ranked names rise simultaneously, the entire sector may be gaining RS against the index. This is different from a single name's breakout — it suggests a sector-level rotation into favour.

What to do when you spot a signal

Rotation signals are attention flags, not trade triggers. When you see one, update your focus list to include newly rising names but do not abandon existing positions solely on rank change. Confirm with at least two consecutive weekly rankings before treating a rotation as established.
